Worked beginner lesson
Read a Japanese calendar: seven kanji, changing readings
A calendar is a small reading task with a useful surprise: knowing a kanji’s meaning does not tell you how to say it. Work through weekdays, months, and dates, then read an appointment without looking at the answers. You only need basic hiragana; this lesson introduces the vocabulary as you go.

Start with the recurring part: 曜日
Every full weekday name below ends in 曜日, read ようび. Hold that ending steady and change the first part. A calendar may show only the first character, so practise in both directions: expand 水 to 水曜日, then find 水 when you hear すいようび.
The meaning cues are a way to distinguish the seven shapes. They are not translations of the weekday names: 木曜日 means Thursday, not “tree.” Read the complete word aloud once, cover the reading column, and try the rows in a different order. Reciting the week in order can hide a word you cannot retrieve on its own.
| Calendar | Full word | Reading | Meaning cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 月 · Monday | 月曜日 | げつようび | moon / month |
| 火 · Tuesday | 火曜日 | かようび | fire |
| 水 · Wednesday | 水曜日 | すいようび | water |
| 木 · Thursday | 木曜日 | もくようび | tree |
| 金 · Friday | 金曜日 | きんようび | gold / money |
| 土 · Saturday | 土曜日 | どようび | soil |
| 日 · Sunday | 日曜日 | にちようび | sun / day |
Use the word to choose the reading of 月
Compare 月 (つき, moon), 月曜日 (げつようび, Monday), and 四月 (しがつ, April). The written character is the same, but its surrounding word changes the sound. When 月 follows a number in a calendar date, you are looking at a month name; when it begins 月曜日, you are looking at Monday.
For this lesson, use 四月 as your month anchor. Its usual reading is しがつ. Do not build よんがつ from the familiar number よん. Another useful contrast is 今月 (こんげつ, this month): a word can refer to a month without using がつ. The reliable unit to remember is the word, not a rule that says “month always equals がつ.”
Separate a weekday from a day of the month
日曜日 answers “which weekday?”; 四日 answers “which date?” In 日曜日 (にちようび), 日 appears twice with two different sounds, にち and び. In 四日 (よっか, the fourth), learn the whole date as a unit. Appending にち to every number will not produce all the date readings.
Start with the small set below before expanding to a full calendar. The first ten dates have special readings to learn; the four rows here are selected for this exercise and are not a complete list of exceptions. Four also appears in 十四日 (じゅうよっか) and 二十四日 (にじゅうよっか).
Context also matters for 一日. On a calendar, the first of the month is ついたち. When 一日 means one day or a whole day, it is commonly いちにち. Keep your prompt specific—“the first of the month”—so you can tell whether the answer you give fits the intended meaning.
| Date | Reading | Meaning here |
|---|---|---|
| 一日 / 1日 | ついたち | the first of the month |
| 四日 / 4日 | よっか | the fourth of the month |
| 八日 / 8日 | ようか | the eighth of the month |
| 二十日 / 20日 | はつか | the twentieth of the month |
Read an appointment in three chunks
Imagine this practice appointment: 四月八日(木)午後二時. First identify the month, 四月. Next read the date, 八日. Expand the parenthesised 木 to 木曜日, then read 午後二時 (ごご にじ, two in the afternoon). The appointment is April 8, Thursday, at 2 p.m. This is an invented exercise, not a calendar claim about the current year.
The full reading is しがつ ようか、もくようび、ごご にじ. If you read the date correctly but called 木 “tree,” the gap is recognising a weekday abbreviation. If you chose the right weekday but said はちにち, review 八日 as a complete date. Those two mistakes need different prompts.
Change only one part on your next attempt: replace 八日 with 二十日, or 木 with 金. Keeping the rest familiar makes it easier to notice exactly what changes in the reading. After that, try the self-checks below without the tables.
Turn the mistake into a useful review
A missed weekday is a good reason to review that complete word. Make the front of a card 木曜日 and put もくようび / Thursday on the back. For an abbreviation problem, use a small appointment containing (木) instead. These prompts test the reading you need in daily life more directly than asking for every possible reading of 木.
On the next day, mix three weekdays with two dates. Say each answer before checking it, and record which part failed. You can use the character links below for stroke order and more word examples. The app’s isolated-kanji Reading Test checks a different skill; use these whole-word exercises to check calendar reading.
Check your understanding
Say or write your answer before opening the explanation. Revisit the relevant example if you miss a question.
1. Expand (水) on an appointment and read it.
Show answer and explanation
水曜日 — すいようび, Wednesday.
A character in parentheses beside a date commonly abbreviates the weekday. Here 水 represents 水曜日, rather than the standalone word みず.
2. Read the two 月 words: 四月 and 月曜日.
Show answer and explanation
四月 is しがつ; 月曜日 is げつようび.
The month name uses がつ and the weekday uses げつ. Remember the complete words instead of assigning 月 one pronunciation.
3. Read 八日 and 二十日 as dates.
Show answer and explanation
八日 is ようか; 二十日 is はつか.
Both are date readings to learn as units. はちにち and にじゅうにち do not give the usual readings of these dates.
4. Read this practice appointment: 四月二十日(金)午後二時.
Show answer and explanation
しがつ はつか、きんようび、ごご にじ — April 20, Friday, at 2 p.m.
Read month, date, weekday, then time. 金 abbreviates 金曜日. Like the earlier appointment, this is an invented reading exercise.
5. Why does 日曜日 contain two 日 but not two identical sounds?
Show answer and explanation
The word is にちようび: the first 日 is にち and the final 日 is び.
A kanji can use different readings even inside one word. Recognising the whole word is more reliable than choosing a reading from the character alone.
